July Art Walk

It’s hard to believe that this month marks one year since we brought Art Walk to Piedmont Avenue! We’re thrilled to witness the burgeoning art movement  that’s inspiring artists and entrepreneurs throughout Oakland and we’re proud to be a part of Piedmont Avenue’s rich and diverse collection of art of all stripes: culinary, music, design, photography, fashion, recycled design and upcycled style, among others. Come to The Bird for Art Walk on Thursday, July 19 from 6-9pm as we celebrate local art, community and Art Walk’s first birthday!

Rare Bird is delighted to ring in July’s Art Walk with featured designer Ari Owens and featured artist Chuck Overton.  Ari’s handmade ceramics are inspired by vintage prints and Chuck’s stunning landscapes offer fresh views of mundane objects in nature. Ari and Chuck’s work will be at Rare Bird all month long, so don’t wait until the 19th to see their amazing stuff.

We’re in the mood to celebrate, so come visit us for Art Walk on Thursday, July 19 from 6-9pm. Crowd favorite DJ SOB is back for his usual gig spinning eclectic tunes and Featherluxe will once again be offering feather hair extensions.

About Chuck Overton:

Living in the Bay Area his entire life has had a profound effect on the style and content of Chuck Overton’s work: the content being the natural beauty of the area and the style being greatly influenced by California painters like David Park, Richard Diebenkorn, James Weeks and Terry St.John.

He describes his paintings as an interplay between the formal elements of composition and a recognizable reference to the subject matter. Where some may see a patch of weeds, Chuck  sees a compositional opportunity. He enjoys celebrating the mundane in nature by assigning it a major role in the composition and, in doing so, hopes to create fresh views of familiar objects.

Chuck’s work has been shown in many juried exhibitions throughout the Bay Area. He has sold to collectors in Phoenix, New Orleans, Sun Valley and all over California.

About Ariane Owens:

Ariane Owens lives in West Oakland.  She started ceramics as a teenager, applying decals, making molds, forms and glazing as her mother’s production artist.  Now her work is traditional majolica using terra cotta clay, tin glaze and mason stains.  All her work is hand built and hand painted; she loves the uniqueness, imperfection and surprise of each piece.  She gathers inspiration from fashion blogs, vintage prints, pottery, French magazines and from her work at Thistle Studio in Point Reyes Station.
