After loads of practice, you’ve gotten pretty darn good at making lampshades or felting bunnies or knitting hats or carving spoons or (your craft here:_______). You’ve got a little itch to go out and teach your skills to others. But it’s scary! You’re a maker, after all, not a teacher. Well, fear no more! This seminar provides a safe space for you to hash out your ideas for teaching a class, get feedback and suggestions, develop a proposal, and learn teaching strategies from a veteran instructor. There’s space for only 8 people in the class. Come meet other like-minded future instructors!

Are you experiencing painters block? You know: you’ve got those half-finished paintings in your basement that you keep meaning to dust off and work on… but what’s the next step? And when will you ever actually get to it? This workshop is for you! Bring your artwork-in-progress and your supplies (or opt for the materials fee and use our acrylics supplies). We’ll begin with a friendly peer feedback and brainstorming session, because fresh pairs of eyes are always helpful. Then you’ll have plenty of time to get un-stuck and back into the flow, as you work on your piece in a safe and collegial environment. Space for 6 painters.

Garden Mosaics

Sunday, April 27 & Sunday, May 4 (two-day class)

You’ve seen them at Rare Bird and in your neighbors’ yards. Time to learn how to make one yourself! We’ll use salvaged materials to make broken-tile mosaic garden embellishments. On Day 1 of this two-part class we’ll adhere the beautiful broken tile pieces to the base. On Day 2 we’ll grout our mosaics and take them home! Includes a wide and inspiring variety of materials to choose from to make one 12” stepping stone. Specialty tiles will also be available for purchase. There’s space for only 6 crafters in this class, so don’t delay!

Little Collaged Houses

Houses have been this instructor’s favorite art subject since she first stood at the kindergarten easel (so says her mom). Such a simple shape! So much potential for character and soul! Artists of any skill level are invited to a guided exploration of this familiar yet rich subject. You’ll learn techniques for adhering paper, images and other materials onto canvas boards, and ways to artfully apply paint and color to your collage. All materials are provided. Class Cancellation Policy:

If you cancel seven (7) or more days prior to the start of your class, we will issue store credit which can be used towards merchandise or a future class.

 If we cancel due to an emergency, less than 7 days before the class is scheduled, we will be happy to issue either a store credit or cash refund.

Classes may be canceled if they do not reach 50% occupancy, so, be sure to bring a friend! If we cancel a class due to low sign ups, a credit will be issued which can be used for a future class or store merchandise.

Notes about Children:

Children are welcome to participate in many of our classes. In fact, some of our classes are offered only to children.  Age guidelines are specified in the class descriptions. Any time a child under the age of 12 is taking a class at Rare Bird, a parent or guardian MUST remain in the store at all times, for your child’s safety and security.

Clay Buttons, Beads & Pendants

This time we’ll be working small. There are limitless possibilities for making beautiful and functional little bits out of clay: accent buttons for your favorite knitwear, beads for a hand crafted piece of jewelry, or a customized pendant for that special someone. (Mothers’ Day gifts, anyone??) You’ll learn techniques for cutting, shaping, stamping, and designing your own miniature works of wearable art. You’ll also glaze (paint) your pieces in class. After class, they will be kiln-fired off-site and ready for you to pick up in approximately 1 week. All materials and firing fees are included. You can make up to a dozen precious little ceramic do-dads. No prior experience is necessary.

DIY Air Plant Terrariums

Create a dreamy plant world that can hang in any urban home.  If you live in the Bay area you’ve seen them everywhere; Air Plants have become popular because of their quirky personalities and easy to care for nature. Tillandsia (Air Plants) requires no soil, very little water & filtered light.  Come learn about Tillandsia and create your own whimsical  air plant terrarium.  We’ll provide the hanging glass globe, plants, & a variety of rocks, sand, crysta
ls & moss to design your own living world. Go home with your creation and instructions on how to care for your new green friend. *Feel free to bring your own precious stones, small figurines, or personal additions to add to your terrarium.

Personalized Tiles & Plaques

When was the last time you played with clay? In this class you will get your hands dirty, shaping ceramic tiles andplaques that can either hang on your wall, or become part of a future personalized mosaic project. You’ll learn methods for cutting, shaping, and stamping clay, and you’ll also glaze (paint) your pieces in class. There’s no experience necessary and the possibilities are endless! After class, they will be kiln-fired off-site and ready for you to pick up in approximately 2 weeks. All materials and firing fees are included. Make up to three 5″ x 7″ plaques or several smaller pieces.

Metal Stamped Jewelry

Wanna make a handmade gift from the heart? Here’s your opportunity to create something hand-crafted andoriginal for you or a friend. Use a hammer to stamp a name or your own personalized message on a copper pendant and turn it into a custom designed necklace. In this class you will learn the technique of metal jewelry stamping and
go home with one copper “nameplate” necklace ready to wear. Choose from letters, numbers and symbols to craft the perfect design.

Say It in Clay

Have a special goal for 2014? A quote, mantra, or phrase that motivates you? Come learn how to shape and stamp clay into personalized plaques you can give as gifts or display year-round. You’ll create and paint your pieces in class, then they’ll be clear-glazed and fired off-site and ready for pick-up by Thursday, Feb. 13th – just in time for Valentine’s Day! Includes materials to make a 5″x7″ plaque (or several smaller ones), and firing fee. Several class times are offered for your convenience-choose the one that works best for you.

Build Your Own Terrarium

Description: This class included all materials, plants, and planting mediums to make your own terrarium. We discussed different types of terrariums, the varieties of plants that thrive in them, and the purposes of the individual layers we plant that will keep your terrarium alive long into the future. Each student went home with their very own glass globe Terrarium!

Silhouette Portraits – Rock legends

with Artist Suzanne Baker

Description: Students learned how to create silhouette fabric portraits of their favorite rock and roll legends from local artist Suzanne Baker. They left the class with a silhouette profile mounted on an 8”x10” fabric background, ready to frame, turn into a pillow or tote bag, or whatever else their imagination could conjure up.

Suzanne Baker is an Oakland artist and craftista who creates one-of-a-kind pieces of functional and decorative art using reclaimed items.
